Kia will make cars in Petersburg

This was announced by the president of “Kia Motors Rus” at the opening of the dealer center Kia “Aurora Auto”, which was held the day before.

Thus, the  information about the plans of making cars of two brands at same plant proved true. Han Chang Kiun reported that on the plant, which opening is planned  in January 2011, besides the manufactures of brand Hyundai, the Kia car of B-class will be produced, which will change the model Rio currently presented in this segment. The name and characteristics of the new model are unknown yet.

Two brands will have an equal share the announced capacity of the future plant of 150 thousand cars per year, this way, Kia will be able to produce 75 thousand cars per year in Petersburg. In this case the main investor of the constructing of the plant, according to the president of “Kia Motors Rus”, will be Hyundai Company. Previously Carry Cho, the executive general manager of “Hende Motor SNG” claimed that the technical ability of producing Kia models on the Hyundai plant is provided, however, the final decision on this question is still not made.

On the first stage of the Petersburg plant only the producing of cars of Hyundai brand will be carried out, the further decisions will be made according to the market situation”, Carry Cho reported in March of the current year. Whether the production of Kia cars will start from the startup of the plant or later Han Chang Kiun could report neither, but he clarified that the final decision is not carried out.

The south Korean brand Kia since 1998 has been a part of the Hyundai Kia Automotive Group which is the subdivision of corporate group Hyundai. However these two brands are marketed separately from each other, in Russia their supplies and sales are performed by different importers. The volume of Kia sales in Russia in 2008 amounted to 88125 cars that is by 12% higher than in 2007(78616 cars).

In the first quarter of 2009 – in this country 13710 Kia cars were sold, that is 35% less comparing to the similar period of the last year(21101 cars). The construction of he Petersburg Hyundai plant of 330 million euro cost started in June 2008. Previously it was reported that on the plant the cars of C class will be produced, with the engine of 1,4 or 1,6 volumetric capability.
